Demonstrates the effects of reused materials on architectural design processes and sustainability.
This study investigated a renovation project of a room in a maternal and child living support facility in Japan, where reused materials were actively implemented. Through involvement of the architect in sourcing, inspecting, and coordinating reclaimed components, the project illustrates how reuse practices reshaped the design process. By analyzing workflow changes and quantifying reuse rate and CO2 reduction based on material mass and transportation data, the study revealed the additional workload and cost implications of reuse. It aimed to contribute to the development of institutional frameworks that supported the sustainable integration of reuse in architectural practice.
