ACE DD genotype linked to ~150% higher odds of increased LV mass vs ID genotype.
Why the study?
Many subjects with left ventricular hypertrophy have normal blood pressure levels, suggesting factors other than hemodynamic overload contribute, prompting evaluation of the ACE gene polymorphism's association with blood pressure and left ventricular mass index.
Is the ACE gene DD genotype associated with increased left ventricular mass index in untreated hypertensive patients?
Cross-Sectional (n=140)
Is the ACE gene DD genotype associated with increased left ventricular mass index in untreated hypertensive patients?
Odds Ratio: 2.497 (95% CI 1.158–5.412)
p-value: p=<0.05
The ACE gene DD genotype is significantly associated with increased left ventricular mass index in untreated hypertensive patients, suggesting a genetic contribution to left ventricular hypertrophy independent of hemodynamic overload.

May support closer LV monitoring in DD carriers; leaves open whether genotyping guides therapy.
Perticone et al. (1997) conducted a cross-sectional in Essential hypertension (n=140). ACE gene DD genotype vs. ID and II genotypes was evaluated on Left ventricular mass index (LVMI) (OR 2.497, 95% CI 1.158-5.412, p=<0.05). The ACE gene DD genotype was significantly associated with increased left ventricular mass compared to the ID genotype in untreated hypertensive patients (OR 2.497; 95% CI 1.158-5.412; p<0.05).
