Review highlights bioorthogonal reactions utilizing iridium(III) complexes for targeted luminescent applications, suggesting novel biomedical uses.
A “plug-and-socket” cartoon illustrates the recent landscape of bio-orthogonal reactions for iridium(III) complexes in biomedical fields. The plug, representing the iridium(III) complexes with a bio-orthogonal handle, selectively engages only with its complementary socket on the cellular targets. The emitted light represents the complexes’ specific photophysical properties, along with the activation of their luminescence, photodynamic and photocatalytic capabilities upon biorthogonal reactions. More details are provided in the Review by J. Wang, C.-H. Leung, W. Wang and co-workers (DOI: 10.1002/chem.202600022).
