Key result
Age ≥85 linked to ~186% greater risk of in-hospital complications after AF ablation versus <60.
Why the study?
Data on the age-stratified safety of catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation in Japan were scarce.
Does increasing age increase the risk of in-hospital complications in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation?
Cross-Sectional (n=135,299)
Yes
Does increasing age increase the risk of in-hospital complications in patients undergoing catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation?
Odds Ratio: 2.86 (95% CI 2.12–3.85)
Absolute Event Rate: 6.8% vs 2.5%
p-value: p=<0.001
In a large Japanese nationwide database, the risk of in-hospital complications following catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation increased progressively with age, highlighting the need for careful patient selection in the elderly.
Supports age-based risk counseling before AF ablation; leaves open whether tailored protocols reduce complications in the elderly.

Yokoyama et al. (2023) conducted a cross-sectional in Atrial Fibrillation (n=135,299). Age ≥ 85 years vs. Age < 60 years was evaluated on Overall in-hospital complications (OR 2.86, 95% CI 2.12-3.85, p=<0.001). Increasing age independently raised the risk of in-hospital complications after atrial fibrillation ablation, with patients aged ≥85 years having an OR of 2.86 compared to those <60 years.
