Abnormally prolonged QTc linked to ~150% greater sudden cardiac death risk in older adults.
Why the study?
Although QTc prolongation is associated with ventricular arrhythmias, population-based studies show inconsistent associations with cardiovascular mortality, and very few have specifically addressed sudden cardiac death.

Prolonged QTc may heighten SCD vigilance in older adults; leaves open causal role and need for prospective trials.
Straus et al. (2006) conducted a cohort in General population (n=7,983). Abnormally prolonged QTc interval (>450 ms in men, >470 ms in women) vs. Normal QTc interval was evaluated on Sudden cardiac death (HR 2.5, 95% CI 1.3 to 4.7). An abnormally prolonged QTc interval was associated with a 2.5-fold increased risk of sudden cardiac death in older adults (HR 2.5; 95% CI 1.3 to 4.7).
