Key result
Male gender is linked to greater LV volumes and dimensions than women despite BSA adjustment.
Why the study?
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging is increasingly applied clinically, but age-relevant, gender-specific normative values for left ventricular anatomy and function were unavailable.
Cross-Sectional (n=142)
p-value: p=<0.001

Sex-specific CMR reference values may refine LV assessment; leaves open validation in broader populations before clinical adoption.
Salton et al. (2002) conducted a cross-sectional in Healthy adults free of hypertension and cardiovascular disease (n=142). Male gender vs. Female gender was evaluated on Left ventricular volumetric (EDV, ESV, mass) and unidimensional measures (p=<0.001). Male gender was associated with significantly greater left ventricular volumetric and unidimensional measures compared to women (P<0.001), which persisted for volumes after body surface area adjustment.
