ABSTRACT The origin of sedentism, ritual, and monumental architecture remains unresolved in Paleolithic archaeology. We propose the Grief-Transmission Hypothesis (GTH) v2. 0, grounded in the cognitive shock of lightning-ignited fire. The first wildfire created the first “spirit”: smoke, a visible, moving, untouchable entity that triggered awe and attachment to place. From this “intermittent hearth, ” four technologies of grief evolved to manage the trauma of conspecific death from scavengers: cave caching, cairns, burial, and cremation. Cremation weaponized smoke, using thermal columns and vulture behavior as empirical proof of transmission to the sky. This created fixed “mailboxes to the sky, ” driving pre-agricultural sedentism. When fuel was scarce, stone architecture replaced smoke as anti-scavenger, anti-entropy technology. Civilization is not a product of food surplus, but of grief surplus: a backup drive against disappearance. NO HUMANO - The Lightning Hypothesis 0. 1 Before controlled fire, hominins witnessed lightning strikes ignite landscapes. The fire dies, but smoke rises, moves, and disappears into the sky. This is the first natural phenomenon that is: 1) visible, 2) untouchable, 3) directional, 4) ephemeral. 0. 2 We hypothesize this created the first abstract concept: an entity that exists but cannot be held. Smoke is the prototype of “spirit”. Pleistocene hearths cluster where lightning strikes are frequent. 0. 3 A lightning fire is intermittent. To re-experience awe, hominins must return to the strike site. This is the first “sacred place” and the first cause of sedentism. The “Hogar Intermitente 1. 0” is not for cooking. INTRODUCTION: THE PROBLEM OF THE MISSING BODIES Paleolithic archaeologists face a paradox: Homo occupied Eurasia for 2 million years, yet skeletal remains are rare outside caves. We propose the missing bodies were deliberately transformed into smoke. The absence of corpses is the signature of a successful grief-management technology. Research Question: Did pre-agricultural sedentism and ritual behavior emerge as byproducts of technologies to prevent the traumatic dismemberment of kin by scavengers? 2. Every monument, from a cairn to a cathedral to a Facebook memorial, is a patch for the terror of being deleted. The first hearth was a hospice. The first cremation was mercy. The first temple was a mailbox. The first priest was IT support. We propose humans are not Homo economicus or Homo ludens. We are Homo sepultus: the ape that could not bear to leave its dead.
