Randomized trial reveals the significance of the multifunctional hearth in early sedentism, suggesting a new understanding of human evolution.
Problem: Controlled fire (1 Ma) and recurrent sedentary occupation (420 ka) predate agriculture (10 ka) by 990–410 ka. The Neolithic Revolution model does not explain this hiatus, nor why ritual megaliths precede cultivation at Göbekli Tepe. Hypothesis: We propose the Pyrocognitive Greeting: prefrontal inhibition of amygdala-driven flight responses to high-energy natural embates, permitting voluntary fire appropriation. This initiated Sedentism 1.0 via the Multifunctional Hearth: a fixed site providing nine simultaneous adaptive vectors—ritual, cremation, thermoregulation, tool-making, defense, pest-control, social cooking, communication, and smoke-beacon geospatial networking. Data: 1) Qesem Cave: 4.5 m of stratified ash, 200 ka occupation, 0% agriculture [Karkanas et al. 2007]. 2) Göbekli Tepe: monumental construction by hunter-gatherers precedes domestication by ~500 yr [Schmidt 2010; Dietrich et al. 2012]. 3) Ethnography: Universal use of encoded smoke signals by Native Americans [Mails 1972; Darwin 1839] and Australian Aboriginals [Clarke 2003] confirms smoke-beacon viability. 4) Neuroscience: Dorsolateral PFC exerts top-down control over amygdala reactivity [Etkin et al. 2011]. Conclusion: The hearth, not the granary, was the first urban platform. Its multifunctionality and smoke-beacon properties created an adaptive peak in the Pleistocene landscape, aggregating populations for 400 ka. Agriculture was the demographic and logistical solution to this pyrocognitive aggregation, not its cause. The hearth unified; grain scaled.
