This article illuminates methods to promote diversity in K-12 education, highlighting implications for curriculum design.
Racial violence in US K-12 schools is often perpetuated by curricular distortion and erasure of the histories and heritages of people of Color. In this article, we, two former students of Geneva Gay and one curriculum scholar, illuminate how Geneva Gay’s five decades of research and scholarship have served as a beacon of hope for fostering diversity and justice in curriculum theorizing and praxis. We reflect on how we have been inspired by the life and work of Geneva Gay in multicultural education and curriculum studies to defy curricular violence and foster the core values of humanity in curriculum studies. We demonstrate diverse ways in which we are advancing Geneva Gay’s scholarship in educational research and practice with new directions for curriculum studies.
