Review paper reveals international volunteering promotes sustainable capacity development, emphasizing local alignment and partnerships.
This review paper examines how international volunteering enhances the empowerment trajectory of the host community and promotes the capacity development in a sustainable way. It stands with the contemporary scholarship and research gaps that have overlooked the critical factors influencing effective capacity development outcomes for the host community from the Global South perspective. With the cross-sectoral framework, this critical review suggests that international volunteering policy and practice have established mutual relationships with grassroots hosts and are poised to be more effective in capacity development. This effort facilitates demand-driven models that accommodate nuanced differences and align with community aspirations. Moreover, it highlights the need for a renewed commitment to tailored strategies and inclusive partnerships that appreciate local voices and values, aiming to overcome challenges and propel effective capacity development in the host community. The findings underscore the importance of aligning volunteer initiatives with local needs to foster sustainable development and community empowerment. The study therefore recommends for a meticulous refinement of collaborative approaches in volunteerism.
