Key result
Food ingestion and orthostasis resulted in cardiovascular hyperdynamism, reduced cardiac vagal tone, and a 500-mL blood shift from the mesenteric to the systemic circulation.
Why the study?
To investigate the effect of a meal on neurohumoral mechanisms and mesenteric blood flow redistribution during orthostasis.
Observational
Food ingestion and orthostasis induce significant hemodynamic shifts, including a 500-mL blood transfer from mesenteric to systemic circulation, aiding the understanding of orthostatic homeostasis.
These shifts may underlie postprandial orthostasis; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
A unique integrated investigation on the effect of meal on neurohumoral mechanisms and blood flow redistribution of the mesenteric circulation during orthostasis was investigated. Food ingestion results in cardiovascular hyperdynamism, reduction in cardiac vagal tone, and baroreflex sensitivity and causes a decrease in α 1 -adrenoceptor responsiveness only in the venous intrahepatic sinusoids. About 500-mL blood shifts from the mesenteric to the systemic circulation during orthostasis. Accordingly, the orthostatic homeostatic mechanisms are better understood.

Zreik et al. (2021) reported an observational. Food ingestion and orthostasis was evaluated on Neurohumoral mechanisms and blood flow redistribution of the mesenteric circulation. Food ingestion and orthostasis resulted in cardiovascular hyperdynamism, reduced cardiac vagal tone, and a 500-mL blood shift from the mesenteric to the systemic circulation.
