Key result
Amlodipine and ibuprofen drive ~41% of potential drug interactions identified in hypertensive patients.
Why the study?
Hypertension typically requires long-term therapy, and concurrent medications for comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia may increase the risk of drug interactions.
Cross-Sectional (n=166)

Potential drug-drug interactions, particularly between amlodipine and ibuprofen, are common among hypertensive patients in primary care, highlighting the need for robust medication management strategies.
Background: Hypertension or high blood pressure is a chronic disease characterized by persistently elevated arterial blood pressure. It typically requires long-term management with antihy-pertensive medications, such as amlodipine and captopril.Patients with hypertension of-ten also receive medications for comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus or dyslipidemia, which may increase the risk of drug interactions. This study aimed to identify potential interactions between antihypertensive medications and other drugs used by hypertensive patients at the Primary Health Center Cimahi Tengah District, Cimahi, during the period from February to July 2023.Methods: Sampling was conducted using a purposive sampling method, with secondary data obtained from patient prescriptions that met the inclusion criteria, comprising 166 patients. Results: Based on the study findings regarding potential interactions between antihypertensive medications and other drugs, it can be concluded that most patients diagnosed with hypertension were aged 56-65 years, females, having comorbid dyslipidemia, and most commonly the one's using amlodipine as their antihypertensive medication. The most frequent potential interaction identified was between amlodip-ine with ibuprofen, primarily through a pharmacodynamic drug interaction mechanism, accounting for 167 cases (78.77%).Based on severity, most potential drug interactions were of moderate severity, with a total of 164 occurrences (77.36%).This study found that the potential drug-drug interactions were relatively common among patients with hypertension at the primary health center, with a substantial proportion categorized as moderately severe. The most frequent interaction identified was between amlodipine and ibuprofen. Conclusion:These results highlight the importance of implementing robust medication management strategies to identify and minimize potential drug interactions.

Septiani et al. (2025) conducted a cross-sectional in Hypertension (n=166). Antihypertensive medications (primarily amlodipine) was evaluated on Frequency and severity of potential drug interactions. Among 166 hypertensive patients, 212 potential drug interactions were identified, most frequently between amlodipine and ibuprofen (40.57% of cases), with 77.36% of all interactions classified as moderately severe.
