Population

25 adults (mean age 44, 76% male) with chronic dual hepatitis C virus (HCV) and TT virus (TTV) infection, free from HBV and HIV, previously untreated.

Intervention

Recombinant alpha interferon (rIFN-alpha 2) 3 or 6 MU subcutaneously 3 or 7 times per week for 3 months (4 patients also received ribavirin 1000 mg/day after the first month).

Comparator

4 doubly infected patients who agreed to be left untreated (used to measure spontaneous viremia fluctuations).

Outcome

Changes in plasma TTV and HCV viral loads during the first 3 months of treatment.surrogate

Alpha interferon treatment in patients with dual HCV and TTV infection reveals that TTV sustains highly active chronic infections with rapid daily virion turnover.
