Furfuryl alcohol, a specific singlet oxygen acceptor, has been used to determine the quantum yield of singlet oxygen production by hematoporphyrin derivative (Hpd) sensitization in water, physiological salt solution and methanol. A slight wavelength dependence of the sensitizing efficiency has been found. A large effect of the sensitizer concentration on the quantum yield of photooxidation is confirmed.
