Implication

These predictors may aid LVH risk stratification in peritoneal dialysis; leaves open causality and need for prospective trials.

Structured PICO

P
Population
38 stable patients on maintenance peritoneal dialysis (PD) ≥ 24 months, mean age 58.2, 52.6% male (20/38), based in Israel. Key exclusions: age <18 years, pregnancy, psychiatric disorders, 'low' and 'high' transporters, ultrafiltration failure, active coronary artery disease, heart failure (NYHA class III or IV), any evidence of infection in the past 3 months, immunosuppressive therapy, liver cirrhosis, malignancy, pacemakers, defibrillators, artificial joints, and pins or amputations.
O
Outcome
Presence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) assessed by calculating the left ventricular mass index (LVMI) using the Devereux formulasurrogate

In patients on maintenance peritoneal dialysis, markers of glucose load, fluid overload, and inflammation are strong independent predictors of left ventricular hypertrophy.

Limitations

  • small number of patients
