Systematic review and meta-analysis reveals poor survival outcomes in cancer patients with low Geriatric 8 scores, highlighting its utility for frailty screening.
Key Points
Evaluate the prognostic value of the Geriatric 8 (G-8) screening tool for survival outcomes in patients with cancer.
Systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Medline to identify studies examining G-8 scores and cancer prognosis (42 studies, N=9,053).
Assessed study quality using the Quality In Prognosis Studies tool and performed meta-analyses of overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) comparing high and low G-8 scores.
A low G-8 score was significantly associated with worse overall survival (HR 2.11, 95% CI: 1.93–2.31, P < 0.001) and shorter progression-free survival (HR 1.78, 95% CI: 1.55–2.05, P < 0.001).
Frailty prevalence across studies ranged from 27% to 91%, with reduced G-8 scores consistently predicting poorer OS across various tumor types, advanced disease stages, and higher ECOG performance status.
