It is suggested that measurements of both relative permittivity and dipolar absorption in the far infra-red could provide a direct evaluation of angular correlations that avoids some questionable approximations used in current theories of the dielectric constant. The treatment is here applied to the propitious case of some highly polar halogenated methanes. In the present report emphasis is placed on the static dielectric constant measurements and their interpretation in terms of Kirkwood's g parameter. An expression for g is derived that incorporates the measured integrated absorption of pure dipolar origin. The experimental values are compared with an alternative derivation using Onsager's formula and Wertheim's solution of the mean spherical model.
