The study found no association between ACE or 5-HT2A polymorphisms and longevity in a northwestern Russian population, but noted significant regional differences in 5-HT2A allele frequencies compared to the US.
No association with longevity in northwestern Russians; leaves open population-specific genetic effects on aging and requires replication before clinical consideration.
The I/D polymorphism of the angiotensin converting enzyme ( ACE ) gene and C 102 T polymorphism of the serotonin receptor gene ( 5-HT2A ) were studied in a group of long-living individuals from northwestern Russia. No significant differences in allele frequencies of these genes were detected between long-living individuals and young people. At the same time, strongly pronounced differences in the 5-HT2A gene A 1 and A 2 alleles in populations of the northwestern region of the Russian Federation and the United States (0.397 ( A 1) and 0.603 ( A 2), and 0.615 ( A 1) and 0.385 ( A 2), respectively) were detected. These significant population differences deserve serious attention and a detailed analysis of polymorphism in other serotonin system genes in different populations of Russian Federation.
