Adult rat models may not predict human inotropic or digitalis responses; leaves open species- and age-specific ion channel validation in cardiac research.
The anomalous lack of positive inotropic response to heart rate increases and digitalis in adult rats is explained by the age-related loss of a slow sodium channel, preventing the necessary intracellular sodium accumulation to drive calcium influx.
