Further investigation into surgical prophylaxis remains essential; leaves open optimal strategies to reduce SSIs.
Great strides have been made since the discoveries and developments of Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister, and Robert Koch. Surgical asepsis remains a fundamental aspect of surgical care today. Although the risk of surgical wound infection has decreased dramatically since the late nineteenth century, SSIs are among the most common HAIs. Further investigation in surgical prophylaxis and preventative measures are essential to continue to reduce the risk of surgical site infections.
