Why the study?
Does the type of coronary artery bypass grafting procedure (OPCABG or CABG with valve replacement vs conventional CABG) influence the early postoperative incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients without prior arrhythmia?
Population
821 patients without a history of arrhythmia undergoing myocardial revascularization procedures
Comparison
Off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting or CABG… vs Conventional coronary artery bypass grafting…
Design
Cohort

CABG with valve replacement was associated with higher postoperative AF than isolated procedures; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.

The incidence of early postoperative atrial fibrillation is not influenced by the use of cardiopulmonary bypass during CABG, but is significantly increased when CABG is combined with valve replacement.
