Why the study?
Atrial fibrillation is associated with cognitive decline and duration of exposure may increase dementia risk, motivating evaluation of the link between AF characteristics and cognitive abilities.
Does the type and duration of atrial fibrillation affect cognitive abilities as measured by the Mini Mental State Examination?
Does the type and duration of atrial fibrillation affect cognitive abilities as measured by the Mini Mental State Examination?
This pilot study found no significant correlation between the duration or type of atrial fibrillation and cognitive deterioration as measured by the MMSE.
Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
No cognitive impairment on MMSE in AF patients; challenges prior links and leaves open need for sensitive testing.
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF), the most common arrhythmia in the general population, is associated with accelerated cognitive decline in comparison with healthy individuals 1 . Some studies reported that the duration of exposure to AF increases the risk of dementia 2 . Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the reported link between AF and its characteristics, such as type and duration, and cognitive abilities in affected individuals.
