Sodium borohydride can be sulfurated to give NaBH 2 S 3 . The sulfurated hydride, when treated with a mercaptan, gives an orthothioborate: (RS) 3 B. The orthoborates react with aldehydes and ketones to give the corresponding thioacetals with quantitative yields, in neutral medium.
