The purpose of the present study was to identify a conceptualization of communication competence as perceived by the elderly. In addition, this study attempts to identify demographic characteristics of the elderly population associated with the communication competence concept. Interviews were conducted with elderly individuals, and their responses were coded into categories outlined by Wiemann’s conceptualization of communication competence. ln addition, the results suggest that elderly individuals who own their own homes demonstrate considerable knowledge of those characteristics that identify general competence described by Wiemann (1977).
