Transesophageal echocardiography is a valuable rescue tool for rapidly identifying and correcting venous cannula malposition to restore adequate venous drainage during cardiopulmonary bypass.
May aid intraoperative detection of venous cannula malposition; leaves open prospective validation before routine adoption.
Malposition of venous cannula can cause inadequate venous drainage during cardiopulmonary bypass. It would be good clinical practice to use TEE to check the position of inferior venous cannula to avoid this problem at the earliest.

Raut et al. (2017) conducted a case report in Severe rheumatic mitral stenosis requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (n=1). Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was evaluated on Correction of inadequate venous return. Transesophageal echocardiography successfully identified and guided the correction of an inadvertently malpositioned inferior venous cannula in the right hepatic vein, restoring adequate venous return.
