Open-chest models overestimate radical production in stunning; leaves open applicability of prior findings to conscious physiology.
Free radicals are generated in the stunned myocardium of conscious dogs, but the magnitude of production and subsequent contractile dysfunction are greatly exaggerated in open-chest models, suggesting previous open-chest studies may not accurately reflect conscious physiology.
