Implication

Should not yet change practice in refractory hypertension; leaves open age-specific effects on blood pressure.

Structured PICO

Does ascorbic acid reduce ambulatory blood pressure in patients with refractory hypertension?

P
Population
24 patients with refractory hypertension, divided into an elderly group (n=12, 6 males/6 females, mean age 78.3 +/- 5.0 years) and an adult group (n=12, 5 males/7 females, mean age 54.6 +/- 6.7 years).
I
Intervention
Ascorbic acid 600 mg/day for 6 months
O
Outcome
Ambulatory blood pressure (systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure)surrogate

Ascorbic acid supplementation may effectively lower ambulatory blood pressure and reduce oxidative stress in elderly, but not younger adult, patients with refractory hypertension.
