Because of the ability of polymers to exist in glassy, rubbery or solvent‐swollen forms which have very different diffusion coefficients they are able to be used very effectively to control the release of incorporated drugs. As the polymers can vary from inert in vivo to biodegradable an even greater scope for versatile formulation is provided. The various parameters governing the design of controlled release implants are discussed.
