Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrating into library management systems and services that allow processes such as automated cataloging, advanced searching, virtual reference, and AI recommendations. However, financially constrained underdeveloped countries lack knowledge regarding the application, pros, and cons of using AI. Thus, in accordance with the PRISMA methodology, this systematic review will aim to collect the existing scientific knowledge about the role of AI in library management and services. The review will provide detailed information about various technologies used in AI, such as machine learning, natural language processing, chatbots, recommendation engines, and generative AI, etc. It turns out that applying AI can prove to be efficient. Chatbots and content recommendation systems have become two of the most researched applications, particularly in the academic libraries’ domain. Numerous obstacles hinder the implementation of these technologies, including insufficient technological resources, a lack of training for library staff, ethical issues such as privacy and algorithm bias, and insufficient policy support. In summary, although there are many opportunities for librarians to use AI technologies, there are several factors that require consideration. For example, librarians in developing nations such as India will gain a lot from AI technologies.
