In general, the sequences of radiofrequency and magnetic field gradients used to form nuclear magnetic resonance images are designed for a stationary object. Consequently, these sequences produce a different response when applied to moving blood. These changes in signal permit visualization of vessels and can be used to measure their open area. In addition, specific relaxation time signatures of lesions may help in identifying the nature of the obstructions.
