Why the study?
The association between various blood pressure variables, potential nonlinearity, and stroke risk in type 1 diabetes was not fully elucidated.
Population
4105 individuals with type 1 diabetes without stroke at baseline in Finland
Comparison
Different blood pressure variables (SBP, DBP, PP, and MAP)
Design
Nationwide cohort study
Follow-up
Median 11.9 (9.21-13.9) years

Supports SBP monitoring in type 1 diabetes below targets; leaves open whether intensification reduces stroke.
In individuals with type 1 diabetes, systolic, diastolic, mean arterial, and pulse pressures are all independently associated with an increased risk of stroke, with risk increasing linearly even at blood pressure levels below current recommended treatment guidelines.
