A mathematical model to study the oil film thickness between the cylinder wall and the piston ring of a reciprocating engine operating in the hydrodynamic or partial lubrication regime has been developed. An analytical model of a honed cylinder was used to calculate the required surface topography parameters. The model allows the effects of engine operating conditions and surface topography on lubrication to be studied in detail.
