The authors present a control strategy to suppress structural vibrations by online variation of the system damping and stiffness. The feasibility of using electro-rheological-fluid-based structures for such purposes is illustrated through a laboratory experiment. Analysis on a beam example is carried out to examine the theoretical predictions in terms of performance of the control law.
