Overview

Hemodynamic alterations may mark elevated atherosclerosis risk in cerebral infarction; hypothesis-generating and requires prospective validation before guiding care.

Structured PICO

How do common carotid artery hemodynamic factors differ between patients with cerebral infarctions, those with cerebrovascular risk factors, and healthy controls?

P
Population
99 subjects, comprising 16 patients with chronic unilateral cerebral infarctions (CUCI), 58 patients with risk factors (RF) for cerebrovascular disease (CVD), and 25 healthy control subjects. Main risk factors in the patient groups were hypertension and hyperlipidemia.
C
Comparator
Healthy control subjects (n=25)
O
Outcome
Common carotid local hemodynamic factors including wall shear stress (WSS), circumferential wall tension (T), tensile stress (tau), blood flow velocities (BFV), internal diameters (D), and intima-media thickness (IMT)surrogate

Changes in whole blood viscosity and blood pressure significantly alter carotid hemodynamics, contributing to the development of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with cerebrovascular disease.
