Overview

Increasing ultrafiltration may lower BP in high-transport CAPD patients; leaves open effects on LVH and outcomes.

Structured PICO

Are peritoneal transport properties associated with 24-hour blood pressure levels and left ventricular hypertrophy in CAPD patients?

P
Population
25 continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients (11 male, 14 female; mean age 47 +/- 14 years) dialyzed for more than 6 months (mean time on CAPD 22.9 +/- 18 months).
I
Intervention
High peritoneal transport status and subsequent increase in ultrafiltration
C
Comparator
Low peritoneal transport status and baseline before increase in ultrafiltration
O
Outcome
Daytime and nighttime systolic and diastolic blood pressure and left ventricular mass indexsurrogate

In CAPD patients, high peritoneal transport status is associated with higher blood pressure, and improving volume status via increased ultrafiltration significantly reduces both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
