When we set out to build an organization, we have in mind a theoretical model of that organization. When we set out to change an organization, we have in mind a theoretical model of what the reorganized structure shoulld resemble. A man of action may deny that he is guided by any theoretical model. That is only to say that his assumptions about organizations remain implicit and are thus not available for conscious analysis and evaluation. This article is based on the assumption that man can act more effectively if he recognizes the organization models he carries around in his head and tests them against the realities of experience.
