Review describes the neurohumoral control of fluid volume and vascular tone across biological compartments, highlighting therapeutic targets for hypertension and edema.
The volum-tension regulator is an integrative system that maintains hydrostatic and osmotic pressure in the body's fluid compartments – the vascular bed, interstitium, lymphatic system, and cerebrospinal fluid. It is based on neurohumoral circuits: the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the vasopressin pathway, natriuretic peptides, and the baroreflex mechanism. The components of the regulator, feedback mechanisms, quantitative parameters (fluid volumes, pressure, filtration and lymph flow rates) are described. The effect on twenty meta-environments of the body has been shown. Pathological conditions (arterial hypertension, edema, lymphedema, impaired glymphatic clearance) and methods of correction, including pharmacological modulation of RAAS, dietary interventions and physical methods are considered.
