The production of a binary reflection kinoform on stainless steel for use with a high-powered CO2 laser is described. The kinoform focuses the laser beam into the letters LUT which may be burned onto a suitable material placed at its focus. A theoretical discussion of the reconstruction process from a binary kinoform is presented and the effects of phase quantization are considered.
