Several drugs have been shown to increase the concentration of 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetic acid (homovanillic acid; HVA), a major metabolite of 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl- ethylamine (dopamine), in the striatal tissues of several mammalian species This report is concerned with the application of a screening test for drugs which increase the concentration of homovanillic acid in the striatum using the albino mouse as the test animal. Possible mechanisms by which such an increase can be produced are suggested.
