Why the study?
Using aortic diameter as the primary criterion for repair fails to address the considerable numbers of abdominal aortic aneurysms that rupture below operative thresholds, particularly in women.
Current diameter-based criteria for AAA repair are insufficient, highlighting the need for improved biomechanical rupture risk prediction, particularly in women.
Hypothesis-generating for biomechanical AAA models in women; should not yet alter diameter-based repair thresholds.
Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are repaired when they meet diameter criteria or when they become symptomatic or rupture. The use of aortic diameter as the primary criterion in the decision to repair fails address the considerable numbers of AAA that rupture below this operative threshold,1 particularly in women.2 Improved prediction of AAA behavior is required to prevent significant morbidity and mortality.
