The characteristics of various liquid scintillators have been determined under conditions such that their performance in very large counters can be predicted. Mixtures based on medicinal paraffin are found to be highly transparent with effective attenuation lengths of nearly 2 metres. The addition of Shellsol A, acting as a secondary solvent, can give a scintillation efficiency about half of the best toluene based scintillators, with greater stability and freedom from fire hazard.
