The solubilities of various aromatic hydrocarbons in aqueous sulfuric acid were determined at 25°. All hydrocarbons studied exhibit a minimum solubility in the 40‐70 wt‐% H 2 SO 4 region. UV and NMR studies indicate that with benzene the variation in solute‐solvent interaction with variation in sulfuric acid concentration is small. The variation of the benzene solubility is therefore rationalized in terms of variations in internal pressure of the sulfuric acid solvent. With dipolar hydrocarbons in aqueous sulfuric acid, solute‐solvent interaction is observed. Solute‐solvent interaction energies of some monoalkylbenzenes relative to benzene have been estimated.
