Why the study?
The functional importance of ipsilateral versus contralateral RVLM projections was lacking, and whether GABA withdrawal mediates increased activity of functionally different sympathetic nerves during hypotension was unknown.
Population
Inactin-anesthetized male Sprague-Dawley rats
Comparison
Ipsilateral vs contralateral RVLM activation, and hypotension before vs after bilateral RVLM GABAA receptor blockade
Design
Preclinical animal physiological study

Highlights differential RVLM projections in sympathetic control; leaves open human relevance in hypotension.
The RVLM has predominantly ipsilateral innervation of adrenal nerves, and baroreflex-mediated increases in splanchnic but not adrenal sympathetic nerve activity are mediated by GABA A receptors in the RVLM.
