The operation and construction of a small laboratory Betatron for 2.8 MeV is described. The total ionization intensity is equivalent to 1 g of radium. Technical information on the magnet assembly and the evacuation is given, and a method of construction of the glass doughnut is described. The method of Compton scattering in a cloud chamber has been employed to show that the X-ray spectrum from a tungsten target has a continuous distribution with a maximum intensity at 1 MeV. Suggestions are made as to the reasons for the departure from the thin or thick target continuous X-ray spectrum.
