The influence of air gap length g on core loss P and excitation S was investigated in model cores including linearized overlap regions. Special emphasis was put on the interaction of core packages with shifted air gap regions. There, normal flux components /spl Phi//sub Z/ arise into neighbouring, gapless package regions. The resulting planar eddy current losses proved to be proportional to the square of /spl Phi//sub Z/. A correlation was established between local distributions of g, /spl Phi//sub Z/, P and S.>
