Apparatus has been developed using the pulse technique for measuring sound propagation constants in the temperature range -100 to 150°C, at frequencies of 400 and 700 kc/s and in the pressure range 2 to 0.025 atm. Calibration measurements in argon are in agreement with theoretical calculations. Preliminary measurements of the vibrational relaxation time of sulphur hexafluoride in this temperature range are reported.
