A system is described for the measurement of logarithmic decrement at low frequencies in a torsional pendulum by the measurement of the decay of velocity, instead of amplitude, in successive transits through the rest position of an optical lever attached to a wire specimen. The method is quick and applicable over a wide range of logarithmic decrement values. Measurement of internal friction associated with the stress-induced ordering of impurities in vanadium is given.
