Gifted children may experience particular difficulties in growing up because they are different from other children in their area of talent. They are vulnerable to problems resulting from the myths surrounding giftedness, unrealistic expectations for their behavior, pressure to perform, constant criticism or praise, pressures to conform, and difficulties in finding friends. Parents and teachers who understand the social and emotional implications of being gifted can provide an accepting environment and can teach social skills that will help gifted children cope with their differentness.
