Education of primary contact practitioners has traditionally followed the apprenticeship model and is best exemplified by the phrase “see one, do one, teach one.” However, the education of health care professionals is undergoing a sea change. At the Center for Advanced Technology in Surgery at Stanford it is anticipated that within 10 years surgeons will be selected, trained, and generally assisted to remain abreast of current clinical practice by use of simulations, virtual reality, and Web-based electronic learning.
