Surgical excision of a right neck mass in a 42-year-old male successfully treated a rare laryngeal paraganglioma, confirmed by characteristic histopathological features.
Why the study?
Preoperative diagnosis of rare laryngeal and thyroid paragangliomas is challenging, and surgery may carry risks of significant intraoperative bleeding and adherence to nearby structures.
Case Report (n=1)
No
Laryngeal paragangliomas are rare tumors that require careful preoperative imaging and multidisciplinary management for successful surgical excision while preserving surrounding structures.
Rare dual paragangliomas highlight preoperative diagnostic pitfalls and surgical risks; case reports leave open need for specific markers.
Paragangliomas correspond to tumors of neuroendocrine origin of chromaffin and non-chromaffin in the paraganglia of thesympathetic or parasympathetic nervous system. Laryngeal and thyroid paragangliomas that arise from the laryngeal paraganglia are extremely rare. Diagnosing two kinds of paragangliomas preoperatively is challenging due to non-specific cytology, pathology, and imaging features, and overlaps with many other neoplasms. Complications in surgery of laryngeal and thyroid paragangliomas may be associated with significant intraoperative bleeding and excision with adherence to nearby structures, including the recurrent laryngeal nerve.

Le et al. (2024) conducted a case report in Laryngeal paraganglioma (n=1). Surgical excision was evaluated on Tumor excision and histopathological diagnosis. Surgical excision of a right neck mass in a 42-year-old male successfully treated a rare laryngeal paraganglioma, confirmed by characteristic histopathological features.
